How to Create a Work Life Balance as a Business Owner

Running a business has many challenges. From finding skilled staff to keeping up with consumer demands and industry changes, it can be extremely hectic trying to maintain successful operations. Often, because of how busy you become as a business owner, you likely let work trickle into your personal time, which leaves little room for a healthy work life balance.

Learning how to balance work and family will not only decrease your stress levels and allow you to increase your focus while you are at work, it will also allow you to become more present while spending time with family. Keep reading to learn about three tried and true work life balance tips that you should start implementing today.

Make a schedule and stick to it

The most important piece of work life balance advice any business owner should follow is to make a schedule and stick to it. Create your schedule at the start of each week outlining what you need to accomplish each day for your business. Plus, be sure to include time for yourself to exercise, spend time with family or friends and participate in any other hobbies you enjoy. You only have a limited amount of time each day, so it’s important to make sure you use it wisely.

Of course, there may be urgent matters that come up that derail our schedules from time to time, so if you can, leave a bit of wiggle room in your weeks for these unexpected occurrences. The most important thing with scheduling your to-dos is to be realistic with how much you can accomplish. Studies show that after working 55 hours per week, our productivity starts to fall and our work outputs suffer. If you don’t have a schedule, it is almost impossible to ensure you have time each day to accomplish critical work tasks while also making time for your personal life.

Another piece of widely touted advice for maintaining work life balance is to put your phone and computer away during family time. Having a definitive break between work and home time will allow you to be fully present with your family. Entrepreneur magazine recommends starting with baby steps if this is something you currently struggle with. It can be as simple as putting your cell phone away while you have dinner. Even unplugging for an hour will work wonders for your stress and allow you to focus more on your family.

Managing child care

For parents, learning how to balance work and family can be the most difficult. You may have a child care arrangement that works with your current schedule, but what happens when an unexpected business trip comes up, or your spouse takes on a more demanding role at work? You may find yourselves scrambling for reliable childcare.

Per the Harvard Business Review, you should always have a plan B when it comes to child care. Consider keeping a bag packed in case your kids need to sleep at their grandparents’ house, or try out a few local babysitting services when you aren’t in a crunch. That way, when something comes up last minute or your regular child care service falls through, you won’t have to worry about finding a safe place to take your kids while you’re working.
The reality is, it is always going to be a balancing act trying to successfully fit in everything in life. However, following the right work life balance tips, such as the ones mentioned here, should assist you in staying organized so that you can continue to successfully run your business while maintaining your health and spending quality time with family.
