If your small business’s technology is hacked, make sure that you’re appropriately prepared to handle the situation, and prevent it from happening again in the future.

Technology can help your small business to function at a more productive level. Unfortunately, it can also have its mishaps. If your small business is hacked, you’ll need to go through several steps to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. 1. How did this happen?

You can’t avoid future small business cyber security hacks if you don’t determine what caused this one! Hire technology professionals who can assess your small business’s technological software and equipment, and diagnose the issue. Once you know who or what caused the hack, you’ll be more likely to prevent it from happening again.

2. What information was compromised?

One of the most stressful aspects of having your small business’s cyber security get hacked is determining what information was accessed by intruders. You’ll need to know if sensitive information was leaked; such as customer, financial or employee records. Once you find out the records that were viewed or stolen, you can work on putting additional security measures in place.

3. How should we inform customers?

If any information pertaining to your customers was leaked, or the hack disrupted their experience with your business, inform them immediately. Draft a press release, or send out an email to your customers explaining what happened and how you’re taking action to ensure it doesn’t occur again. Understandably, if this hack compromised any of your customer’s records, they may be upset. It is important to train your staff on how to interact with customers in this situation, so consider holding a special customer training session in order to prepare them.
